The most common ailments that affect millions of Americans is acid reflux. Though refluxing is a very normal occurrence, you need to avoid certain habits in order to get rid of it and be able to feel better.

There are many factors that can contribute to poor digestion. Lack of a proper diet can lead to poor digestion. If your body lacks the necessary nutrients, you will have a hard time digesting the food that you eat.

So, when you are planning a proper diet, one of the first things that you should consider is having a diet that is low in fat and high in fruits and vegetables. If you eat junk foods regularly, your digestive system will suffer because it doesn’t get enough nutrients. These foods are not good for your stomach because they are very rich in fats.

Acid reflux is caused by an overgrowth of bacteria in the lower esophageal sphincter. When the bacteria enter the esophagus, the acid production in the stomach will cause burning and swelling. It is the natural reaction of the stomach to fight off the bacteria.

If the body’s natural response to the influx of bacteria is to have your esophagus inflamed, then this is also referred to as gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD. It is basically a collection of symptoms and diseases that affects people who have a poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle.

Once you have acid reflux, it is hard to get rid of it. The best way to go about curing this disease is to make sure that you are eating a healthy diet that is low in fatty foods.

Try to avoid fatty foods like red meat, oily fish, and the likes. You can still eat other kinds of foods that are low in fat, but try to add them to your diet in moderation. Low-fat dairy products such as soy milk and skim milk are great alternatives to fatty dairy products.

Low-fat, natural foods are also very beneficial. You can add whole grains, green vegetables, and fresh fruits to your diet.

Avoid all the drinks that you usually drink to help avoid further acid reflux. Most of these drinks include colas, coffee, and tea. Drink as much water as you can.

Drinking plenty of water can help clear your sinuses and have a positive effect on your GERD symptoms. It is highly recommended that you do not drink more than six to eight glasses of water every day.

Even though you can’t control what your body does, you can control what you eat. And with the proper diet, you will be able to keep your digestive system running smoothly.
